Old Hickory and she is still tough
« on: April 16, 2017, 07:04:04 PM »
Well yesterday was a grind to say the least. I caught one keeper and 6 short fish all day long. They have not posted the results yet so I am not sure how I placed. This is a lake that has been very tough on me from the start. I am going to have to figure it out before September when our regional is on it. Just have to try and rebound this coming weekend.

Old Hickory looks like a good fishery, lots of channels that I can see, if I may ask a question, have you spent any time just scouting? looking at drop-offs and such?

Just looking at google maps it appears to give the impression that it may have some submerged grass near some of these main lake channels, I am assuming that there is current, maybe more on some days than others looking at the dam.

It also appears to have several good creek channels as well that look like they could be productive.
Too much cause and effect thinking takes the freedom out of fishing- Bill Murphy

Spent 12 hour on this lake the Wednesday before the tournament and caught 20 or so keepers with best 5 going may be 10 pounds. This is a highly pressured lake being so close to Nashville and for some reason has a problem growing big fish. For this reason the TWRA set the size limit on Large Mouth to 14" on this lake where everywhere else is 15". TVA makes sure this lake stays very steady at it's level of I think 444 so there is very little current unless there has been a big rain. This lake is full of wood laydowns and has some grass and some good creek channel bends. The fish on this lake are in all stages and also I believe the fish act differently during the week compared to the the weekend. I have fished this lake since 2013 at least a couple times a year, it has been know to take some of the best bass fisher men and women down.

I love a good challenge !! LOL !!!

I think that's why I love my home lake so much too, sounds just like Ol' Hickory, lots of good bass in her though, its been known to put a thumpin' on some high quality sticks here as well, the three sections of the lake fish entirely different from one another, its almost as if you are fishing the separate entities every day, all day.

Hope you are able to find something better buddy and put a shellacking on the field down there, best of luck in the future and be safe !!!!
