[How To] Understanding and Using Topic Categories (An awesome new feature!)
« on: March 29, 2017, 10:44:30 PM »
How many times have you visited another fishing forums and been overwhelmed with the countless posts. You simply wanted to read about spinnerbaits, jigs or some other specific area of bass fishing. Even with a search, your job of whittling down the stack of posts was still no easier.

Fishinpedia has found an awesome solution to this dilemma!

I am pleased to introduce you to Topic Categories!  I am using our board "Lure Talk" for the examples below.

When you view a board enabled with Topic Categories (not all boards have Topic Categories) you will immediately see the list of available Topic Categories across the top. As you view the list of posts you will see the Topic Categories on each post in the list. (As shown below.)

When you start a new topic/discussion you will see the option to "Select Category". Only boards that have Topic Categories enabled will show this option. Not all boards will have Topic Categories enabled.

When you click "Select Category" a list of Topic Categories will drop down for you to choose from. Simply click on the Category that best fits your topic.

Once your Topic Category has been selected, you are ready to fill in the rest of the details of your post such as the Subject, Tags and of course the main content of your post.

Topic Categories are a huge benefit to you if you are simply looking to read. When you open a board you will immediately see a list of all the Topic Categories available on that board, listed across the top. To see all the discussions pertaining to that topic, click on the corresponding Topic Category.

Once you have clicked on the corresponding Topic Category the board index will only show those discussions that are set with that Topic  Category. This will mean that you can now read discussions only on that subject. In this example below, I selected the Topic Category "Soft Plastics" and now that is all that shows. To see all discussions again click on "Show All Topics".

Members are not required to use Topic Categories but they definitely would be beneficial to all, as you can see above. Not only will they help organize all the great information we share but they will also aid you in researching certain topics in the future. As you use this site and this great feature, if you feel we are missing a Topic Category that you think we could use please feel free to let us know about it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this Fishinpedia "How To" tutorial. I hope you enjoy this great feature and making the most of it.

Tattered Thumbs, Jared

I actually love the topic categories. Most "search" results don't really get you where you want to be as fast as you want. This is a lot easier IMHO.

So true! A search will find you every post with that word or term even if it the mention of the phrase/word has nothing at all to do with the posts topic. With the Topic Categories, that will never happen. You want jig posts, you got it. You want swimbait posts, rods posts, summer, winter, spring, spawn, etc.... you got it.   Of course there is one catch... that is that in order for the Topic Categories to be the most effective, members need to choose a Topic Category when starting a new topic.

Though, what I will often do, if I see a post without a Topic Category, and think that it would fit well under a certain Topic Category, I will "modify" the post and assign it a Topic Category.

:D

I would certainly help you "modifying" post just to add a topic category if you think I should do that?  :)
