Good Morning All  The weather here is still in the 70's at night and up in the upper 80's in the day time.  My buddy Mark had surgery and they removed 48 tumors from his body the largest was the size of a baking potato  He looks like a patch quilt with all the staples in him.  Going to go see him this week.  I hope all of you are in good health and able to get out on the water.  GOD BLESS and tight lines to all.

In a recent tournament event at my home lake that I haven’t fished for quite some time I put aside the tools that got me nowhere over the last several events that I had participated in.

I put away my crank bait stuff, all of my gear that never did well for me at this particular lake, I broke out my jigs and my worms and focused my attention on what I know best and finally found some success again.

I had taken some time off from what I knew well to branch out so to speak, I wanted to be more versatile in my angling so I left my confidence stuff at home.

Over the last several years I went crank bait fishing, I went spinner bait fishing, you get the picture.

I won’t say that I didn’t have success, I did, I also learned a lot about my home lake and it’s hydrology, it’s a nuke plant lake and my fishing is primarily done on the return side or what is known as the public side of the lake, to understand crank bait fishing, it helps to understand current and how the fish use those currents, this for the most part brought me the success of catching my first crank bait fish, a keeper but none the less a successful day of learning.

As I look back on some of the ventures, well, a lot of ventures really, I noted in my journal that “I must remain open minded”, this was a personal “note to self” not to get discouraged and give up on a technique so to say that I would not lose confidence in the bait or technique.

I’ve since found that a lot of the techniques I didn’t have a lot of success with on this particular body of water doesn’t necessarily reflect my poor performance with these baits, I’ve found that other man made bodies of water are more apt to accepting these different techniques or tools we use, basically I’ve discovered that what works for one body of water may not be suited for another and I believe that looking back now that is where we lose a lot of confidence in our abilities to become more avid anglers or more adverse in our sport.

I think Ike said it best, even though he may not be talking about this exact train of thought, “NEVER GIVE UP”.

If anything, this experience has opened up a great deal of learning for me, once thought of moon phases and the likes that were simply dismissed as an over complication of a simplistic thing such as fishing has now had an impact in my approach to the day, yes, we still tend to over complicate things but facts are facts, hard bottom, structure, moon phases, current and the like play a significant role in our daily success, or, lack thereof.

It’s a lot harder than it looks some may say but, the work one puts in is well worth the rewards.

This happened to one of my FB friends fishing my home lake, one wouldn’t think about this happening on such a body of water, it’s a pretty quiet and tight knit kind of community here, just goes to prove that you just never know.

I agree with you about having your phone ready and at least accessible to your co-angler as well, I also prepare for the worst case scenario.

Be careful out there fellas. Keep the police under a speed dial on the 2nd page of your phone. (helps to avoid butt dials) You never know when you'll some help.
