So , when is the right time for top water baits ?

IMO , anytime the conditions meet the requirements , there are all kinds of top water baits , walking baits , buzz baits , frogs , poppers , devil horses , each have their own characteristic value , each have a purpose and under the right conditions are a deadly part of your arsenal .

Walking baits are great and proven very effective when used over top of submerged grass areas .

Frogs work best when vegetation covers the surface with an occasional opening .

Poppers , buzz baits , devil horses , all of these are great just about anytime the water is stained enough that it makes other baits hard to see and you need some noise to attract attention , with top water baits you must be careful , how and when you choose to use them , for example , on a calm day with calm waters , it's much easier to spook the fish with a buzz bait , especially if the waters have other toothy predators that keep your bass on high alert , most favorable conditions are when the water has a slight chop for these high vibration baits , this is not to say that these baits will not perform in calm waters , because they absolutely will catch fish in calm waters , it's rather to suggest that one must be open minded to the conditions and adjust , running a buzz bait just under the surface at a slower retrieve will attract and entice a strike under dead calm conditions .

Top water baits are also awesome "search baits" for the more aggressive schools of fish , walking baits , devil horses , poppers are awesome for open water on points and around cover , they have been proven to call up fish depths of 15 feet or more , so again the top water lure proves to be a very effective tool in areas that one would not normally consider using a top water bait .

Be open minded about these baits and try them in areas you would not normally consider top water areas , we all know that top water baits are most effective during the early morning and late evening hours for sure , when all else is failing , make them come to you , it's their instinct to attack a dying bait no matter where they are in the water column .

I don't usually start to throw topwater in the spring until the water gets to 60 or so. In the winter i throw it as the water falls all the way to 41. The first 3 day rainy cold days in November are my favorite time of year. Perfect set up is 38-42 degrees, light to moderate rain squalls on points the wind is blowing into. My best smallmouth trips have always happened this time of year on topwater

Top water baits are awesome to use at night. You throw hear the noise of lure. THEN BAM fish on. You just gotta try it.
Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I'll go Fishin.

 I love top waters...
Try this with a popper: put a pinch weight 12" up your line and you will see better action from the popper.
My favorite is a jitterbug . They seem to work anytime.
