Question: Is a lure great only because we catch fish on it?
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:46:03 AM »
I ask the question because I make lures that catch pretty much every species and therefore believe them to be great. Whether someone else could do the same is beyond me (though I know they could), but catching is still believing. Catching larger fish is a lot easier in some waters than in others and especially  in waters that don't see much fishing pressure (IE NYC reservoirs) as compared to where fish may be kept more often. So of course some lures that regularly catch bass may seem like the best thing since the advent of the barbed hook, but are they?

Next, just because I haven't caught many bass on a lure, doesn't mean it can't do well the more time it's used properly. A friend I fished the aforementioned reservoir with did great with deep dive crankbaits and blew away the jig & trailer I was casting. Once I started casting the same lure that could reach the same depth, I started catching bass. Still not my favorite lure for the weedy waters I fish, but at least that day it was my favorite lure which brings up another point: is a lure great because we can fish it in more waters and situations (cover, depths, presentations)?

Deep waters required different lures and presentations than shallow lakes that are on average less than 12' - which many lowland lakes are. Mountain lakes routinely have depths over 100', so my lures will lose their appeal fast if I can't reach the fish with them or cover water effectively.

So the only way to know whether lures are great, is to experience catching fish with them in waters best suited to them. (Still, I'd just as soon catch 100 fish in a shallow lake then 10 or less fish in a much deeper one in the same amount of time on the water. What's more, I'd just as soon catch more species than just bass as well as fish of any size that tick my line. To each his own when it comes to the challenge of fishing.)

Some lures are associated with my first fish caught,On Greenwood Lake , the New York side, off the old 17 bridge, next to where Brickners landing was.
#7 Rapala in Gold/black, for some reason I stopped using them years ago, as I drifted from lighter rigs
'then there is the Jitterbug, still my favorite nite topwaterm in any color of black
Square bills, especially the older Bagleys

Until I found Manns Jelly worms and Zoom Trick worms, and it was on

Some baits I like for nostalgia, most for mindless effectiveness
I like to catch a few fish per hour, size nor weight are not an issue for me I dont even have a scale or ruler
I rarely target fish other than Bass. When I was still on the East Coast, salt water summer meant Huge Blue Fish and Stripers ,no skill needed just the Skipper of the Betty W
So I like to use the baits that I have gained confidence in and produce numbers not size of fish

Me too! which is why I use soft plastics rigged on light jigheads.
