[Topwater] Topwater Popper Knot Trick
« on: July 27, 2015, 12:09:47 PM »
A trick that I like to do with my popper type baits is to tie directly to the bait with a knot, such as a polomar. After I have my knot tied and tightened up, I slide it down and under the knot tie loop and push up against the back of the mouth of the bait as illustrated below.

What this does, with every twitch, is it pulls the bait down at a bit sharper of an angle, giving the bait more "bite" into the water, creating a somewhat different popping/chugging sound than if it were attached with a swivel, a loop knot or left in the center of the knot tie loop as normally done. Sometimes this difference can be what it takes to get bit, especially on high pressured lakes.

Every couple casts, you will have to check your knot and push it back down and in place. If the knot begins to slide out of place too often, it's time to retie

Wonderful tip Jared , if I may add a little to this , if you are able , keeping your rod tip low will have almost the same affect , teach yourself a little patience when using a top water popper , a lot of times , especially if the fish are deep , it takes time for the fish to work their way up and grab it , let the ripples dissipate after each pop if they are in deeper water , ( more than 10 feet ) calm , still , clearer waters you may not want to be too aggressive with your pops either , take your time and experiment , these things are an exciting tool to have in your arsenal .

Thanks for the tip Jared. I'll have to give it a try. Just might improve my use of the popper.

I bought a Live Target topwater set a couple months ago. It had a frog, a walk-the-dog and a popper/spitter. If anyone's looking for a great popper, this one is the real deal.

That's a great tip Jared, but unfortunately won't work for me.  Here in the Great Frozen, I have gotten to the point where I will not throw anything into the water unless it is tied with tie-able steel leader.  We have too many toothy critters just waiting to rip off whatever lure we use.  I even use this stuff on senkos and flick shakes.

If you want a better action on a popper; take a pinch weight and put it 6"-12" up the line from the popper.

This is an old Rick Clunn method of using poppers. I've found that in clear water faster is better. It works best with baits that have the bottom lip set back from the top, helps it to spit not blup.
A popper I've come to like is the Matzuo, funny thing is, it comes with a split ring mounted to the bait. It's plastic, cheap, maybe the least expensive popper out there, and it just plain works.

I like those cheapo Matzuos too. Just have a great sound and action. Fish really respond. Change out the hooks though.
