[Soft Plastics] Went back to from whence I started
« on: July 05, 2018, 08:55:09 AM »
Hello New to the Forum, Im 68 years old. I started fishing when I was 13, at Lake Ronkockoma in Long Island, growing up in Lynbrook. I currently am in Elk Grove CA, I hate it here, next year upon our retirement will move to South Carolina!
Anyways I have been chasing LMB most of my life. I started with a #7 Floating Rapala, until someone gave me a Creme Rubber worm,it caught bass and caught them a lot
When I moved away from the pre rigged Creme with the prop up front I found Mann's Jelly worm and that bait, and the various ways to fish it ( Jig,T rigged etc) along with the Senko type bait later on became my two most favored and successful lures'
Then I joined a few forums, one in particular gave me a lot of suggestions and my rod numbers increased and my lure selection grew to 72 lb tackle bag! My fishing became less successful and less fun. Until I got what had happened . I fish for neither size or tournaments, I have no opinion on either, just not my thing.
I fish for fun, having a stressful job, I needed relaxation.
So on  one of these forums they are heavily moderated and push their sponsors stuff in an unreasonable controlled way, and I was naive ( coming from dial up era) I did not realize how not only their sponsors stuff was being pushed but a lo of the forum posters, answering my questions were getting discounts from tackle companies, based on how many words they used to get a guy to buy their products, and then the tide turned for me in my brain I got off all the forums, especially that one
So Remember reading the Bassholes and Jared the owner now has this site,I am trying this again as the best information came from that site, and questions were answered nicely I know there is steering, and it is the way of business I avoid those who do it without owning up to it!
I got rid of most of my tackle I now only fish with a small variety of Worms , he same. Life on the water is successful, simple and good again Sometime old dogs do not need new tricks!

Welcome Worm.  I'm just a few years older than you but I also fish for fun and also belong to a bass club.  I fish one TX a month.  I have a boat full of tackle and rods a reels.  I'm retired and would rather be out fishing than setting at home.  I try and fish with as many different people as I can and enjoy teaching them how to use different lures and styles of fishing as I know how.  I started fishing when I was 4 and 70 years later I'm still out fishing.
Put a rod in my hand and a boat under my feet and watch me catch bass.

Welcome worm. I'm a year younger. I fish in three clubs, one of which I'll be dropping next year. Reason being it's more about egos and money there. The best club is mine, and all agree. It's Bassin 4 Fun.
I also lighted my tackle too. Love plastics. Few spinner baits and jigs. I now settled on St Croix rods and Lew's reels. One rod 65# braid for weeds and pads. The rest of my rods are wit 20# braid and floro leaders, can feel everything below the water. Favorite is the whacky rig and neko blk/blu flake. Night time is jitterbug and Strike King Midnight spinner. Blk.
Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I'll go Fishin.

Welcome to the forum.
I'm a bit older but young at heart LOL.  Been there, done that pretty much what you and everyone has said and don't miss any of it - especially clubs and the politics that ruin them to include the one bass forum I'm pretty sure we've both had negative experiences with.

I still own a ton of tackle - lures, rods and reels accumulated over the decades but now in storage for posterity. I think what saved me dumping the sport was the challenge of making and designing my own lures. Sure, I 've caught bass on every lure and technique known to man, but then what? Fishing in my mind is about the mystery - not what others insist it is. Variety is the spice of life and that includes lure design and lure theory.

Why fish bite has nothing to do with what lure sponsors and fishing shows preach and, strange as it may seem, lure designers - including GY - know exactly why fish bite man-made objects we call lures. And now so do I! There isn't a day I fish that I'm not asking and answering questions regarding lure action and design and it's been so for over a decade.

Sharing ideas is in my mind a way of saying thanks to the fishing gods that have maintained our passion for the unknown that becomes known when it comes to fishing. I've helped a few that never had near as much time or the resources I've had to become a better angler of all freshwater fish species. I can't but help but catch at least 4 species on every outing. Having gone down in lure size and gone light in rod action has allowed my to do just that.

Again, I'm hoping the forum activity here increases. I post regularly on other forums which welcome new ideas and never push products. I keep a photo journal of every outing and post many pictures that prove new ideas true that anyone can validate for themselves. And seeing as how my memory isn't what it once was, continues to remind me what was and what is.

Frank

Couldn't ask for more.

BTW, I know the forum you mentioned; I was kicked off it for going against the commercial wisdom imparted by individuals (now moderators) that came across as the next Roland Martin. Lurecraft has given me insights by asking and then answering questions regarding what fish bite, how often and anything else that disputes the BS we've been exposed to over the decades. Always good to know there are open minded anglers out there to share with.
