[Topwater] What's Your Follow Up Baits for Topwater Fishing?
« on: April 30, 2017, 10:53:48 AM »

Whenever I fish topwater, I always have another rod on the deck, rigged and ready to go. This rod is rigged with my follow up bait.

A follow up bait is a bait that you can access very quickly so you can cast it out immediately after a fish misses your topwater offering.

These are very important when fishing faster moving topwater such as a buzzbait. Pro's like Ish Monroe even use a follow up for Whopper Ploppers which can be fished fast or slow and can be stopped.

The idea behind the follow up bait is if the fish misses your topwater bait, you quickly grab your follow up, toss it out and let it sit or sink in the area that the fish missed your bait.

With the River2Sea Whopper Plopper Ish likes to follow it up with a River2Sea Bully Wa 2 Frog. He can work it slowly and methodically to entice the bass with bad aim to come back and strike again.

I also like to use a tube bait as follow up to my buzzbaits or even my topwater poppers like Don Iovino's Splash-It. When the fish misses my bait, I drop that rod, grab my follow up rod and toss out my tube as fast as I possibly can.

Rule of thumb with a follow up bait is to match the color of the topwater bait the fish missed. White buzzbaits I follow up with white tube baits. White or Bone River2Sea Whopper Plopper, Ish follows up with a white frog.

Everyone has their own personal preferences for their follow up baits. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions, advice and suggestions on this topic. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, there is no such thing as a stupid question and we will answer all.

There are many circumstances when considering your question.  If I am throwing a hollow body frog, most likely it is up in the ugly stuff like pads or mats.  This style of fishing calls for long casts and most likely for me the follow up would be to return the frog to the location of the blow up.  If however the blow up is within flipping range then a follow up with a d bomb is my usual choice.  I have used senko for this purpose but not all that often.

In the case of open water as you referenced then going back in with a plopper or a ribbit style bait is a common choice for me.  It is kinda hard to go back in while trying to recover from a near heart attack created by the original blow up.

Question, Does this count for a follow up? On a miss if you throw same bait, same spot and either slow down of go to a stop and go retrieve? More likely what I would do

Throwing same bait after a blow up can be just as effective in certain cases.  If bass are schooled up and feeding on shad or small baitfish then firing back out there will work.
When it's not a "feeding frenzy" I like to throw a dying follow up bait.
           Primary bait = Follow up bait
          Buzzbait = Fluke style
          Splash It/ Popper. = Weightless Tube
          Sammy. = Creek Crawler/Senko
          Burning Spinnerbaits = Fluke
  Another good follow up bait is a wacky rigged  swimbait!
I agree to matching the basic color scheme as your primary bait, but even if it doesn't match, make sure to chuck something back out there!!!!!
Hooksets are free!!!

It doesn't matter as long as it's weightless, I usually have a super fluke or a big creature bait, usually a Super fluke though.

I have been known to follow up with a weightless plastic bait or just make another cast with the frog.
Put a rod in my hand and a boat under my feet and watch me catch bass.
