[Knots] Palomar.........why or why not?
« on: May 23, 2017, 04:22:44 PM »
I use the Palomar knot for 90% of my fishing knot needs......the only time I step away from it is when I am throwing topwater lures where I want direct contact with the lure (buzzbaits excluded).

So all you savvy anglers out there............the Palomar knot.....why, or why not?  :)

It doesn't matter what I tie on, it gets the Palomar Knot, I have NEVER lost a fish to that knot.

I'm with youz guyz I use a Palomar knot  like 95% of the time, except when it will inhibit a Hitch Hiker from keeping a plastic straight on a jig head or hook, then and only then I use a cinch

I've always used the fishermans knot or UNI knot, but last weekend I had brand new 40lb powerpro throwing a swimjig in a tournament.  The first 2 bites I had I set the hook and the line came free so easily I barely even felt weight on the other end.  It could have been pike biting my line, but I retied with a double palomar and caught several fish the rest of the day with no problems at all.  Double palomar will probably be my go to from here on out.

I know it has a big following and has for several decades.  However, I have never liked that knot.  It has always been a pain for me.  Several years ago I learned how to tie the 16/20 or sometimes called the Pitzen knot.  It is all that I use for any line and bait that I use.  I can tie it with gloves on and make a cast before my partner can tie the Palomar.
If you're too busy to go fishin' you're too busy.

I grew up tying the improved cinch then moved to a palomar knot in my early teens when I started really getting more into bass fishing and reading Bassmaster and other mags. I have tied a Palomar for decades but....
over the last several years I experimented with other knots.

I still tie Palomar often but when I am tying fluorocarbon, I prefer the double pitzen.

When I am tying spinnerbaits or baits that I can easily spin on the line, I will tie improved cinch knots still..

for quite a while i was also using the Miller knot and the Uni knot. I still like them both.

I really do enjoy learning to tie different knots.
