Summertime Cabin Fever
« on: July 25, 2020, 03:31:19 PM »
Here in the south, we experience a different form of cabin fever that is quite the opposite of the cabin fever you northern folks get every winter.  This time of year for us heat index temps are typicall near or above 100 degrees and humidity can be sky high as well.  Cloudless skies often abound that scorches you to the bone.  Certainly not a comfortable situation let alone trying to spend a day fishing in those conditions.

Most likely not much fishing will take place for me until about late September.  Being a geezer my in body thermostat just does not work that well and the heat is not something I want to deal with.  Plain and simple it is just too dangerous.  While all of this is kinda bad news the good part is we can at least fish all winter and that makes up for it most of the time.  There are many summer days that I miss my years in Massachusetts and those warm but comfortable summer days.  Oh I remember some hot days there but for the most part there are not all that many.

You yankees are now in prime time and I would think you would be posting some good fish pics.  How about it.  Are you not fishing or are you just not catching.  If you are not fishing you need to dust off those sissy sticks and get after it.  You are missing some great on water time.  For us down here we will just stand by for a while and suck down some sweet tea until things cool down.

I have a buddy up in Canada who is lighting the smallies up and some LMB too, they are seasonal and do not have a big window in which they can get out and fish so he makes the most of his time.

I am 57 and still fishing right now but it’s defiantly not like it used to be, I have to wear a hat and keep a hoorag wet in the cooler along with a lot of gatoraid, I have to admit, it is getting pretty difficult to keep focused on those days when the bite is really tough but with the added protection it really does do a world of good.

Hope you guys are getting out up North, good luck, have fun and be safe !!

Hi Bud,
I hear you when you talk about sitting out on the summer fish bite. It can get ungodly hot out there.
We just came off a sixteen day vacation in July which we fished thirteen days of and a nine day vacation in August which me and the ever Lovely Amy (Mrs Peele) fished seven days of.   Lord she's a keeper !
The older I get, it seems some days it can get a bit overwhelming but call me crazy, I love to be on the water.
We recently moved to a different part of Virginia that has a lot of tidal, brackish water creeks, some saltwater and rivers like the Rappahannock, Mattaponi, and Pamunkey.
We have been catching a bunch of different species like Bass, Catfish, Stripers, Speckled Trout, Long nose Gar, Crappie and Bluegill, Bowfin and even an occasional crab and EEL.
Don't you worry though, you sit this one out until it's safer for you to get back in the boat. We'll hold down the fort for now.
The Charm of Fishing is that it is the Pursuit of what is Elusive, but Attainable. A Constant series of Occasions for Hope !
