Got 1st place this weekend
« on: October 10, 2017, 09:06:38 AM »
It has been quite challenging to balance fishing, college, and the normal drama life brings these past almost two years, but this past weekend was a great jolt.
I fished the USA BASSIN tournament by myself out of Little River, Lake Barkley on Saturday and it was just a daunting task to get on the water. Friday after finishing school work I made sure the boat was ready, nope flat tire. Off to the tire shop and with 15 minutes to spare they got me taken care of. Back home get ready to go to bed and the toilet backs up. Try everything possible to unclog and nothing. Pull down the ceiling and find a clean out, run a snake and nothing. End up putting the garden hose in and luckily it worked. Get a couple hours sleep and off to the tournament. Pay my entry fee go back to the boat and only have power to the engine. No lights, bilge, live well, nothing. Work frantically to figure out what is going on. After 30 minutes and still nothing I start tapping my electrical key pad and everything starts to work. Launch and make a 45 minute run to my first stop, nothing. Second stop another 15 minute away, nothing. By 10:00 I was wondering if I made the right choice to make the long run. 10:30 I put my first keeper in the boat 3 lb. Move on another 15 minutes away and caught a line burner, 1.5 lb. I am all in now and run 10 more minute to my last spot south. Pull up and get a 2.5 lb. Then I miss 3 fish, ugh. Right before I leave I throw up one more time and nail a 5 lb. It's a grind, but I thought I just might have a chance to win. Time is killing me though. I start my way back to the ramp. Stop where I get my first fish of the day, nothing. On the move again. Make a stop on a point, but can't fish where I want due to two other boats are on it. I start to fish and it ends up being two buddies that where showing the local college guys how to fish it and called me down. I thanked them and said I need one more. They told me get it done. It took me 15 minute to fire the fish up and I get my 5th fish in the boat. Go over to the two boats and throw them some of my homemade lures that I just caught the fish on and thanked them again. One more stop is all I have time for. Pull up cast and get hammered. Thought I was going to be able to cull my small fish out. Right size fish wrong fish, it's a drum. Out of time make the hour run back to the weigh in. Not a lot of happy faces there. Tough day for most. Saw a fellow angler that I told him "I would either hero or zero today" at the start. I am the last to weigh in and 14.17 was leading. My fish go on the scale and the director calls out 14.25. Wow, what a crazy 36 hours and my first win by myself in over two years.
Moral of this win is, when you think your down and out put you head down and grind with everything you got. Sometime you end up being rewarded and those days are what keeps me going.

Congrats on toughing it out and getting the win Joe.  You had enough pre tournament problems to send a lot of guys to the house.

Reading your story brought back an old memory to me.  My partner and I had been pre fishing all over this lake in separate boats.  He found one place where we could catch fish.  I found none.  It turned out to be over 60 miles from the tournament site.  We placed but it was one long boat ride both ways.
If you're too busy to go fishin' you're too busy.

Congrats on the win Joe. Seems like when things happen, it's all at once like that and all we can do is hang on.
