Got the win with lots of help
« on: April 23, 2018, 09:27:41 AM »
Yesterday was the start of the USA BASSIN KY 12 Grand River Division that I direct. Mother Nature thought it would be funny to rain on us all day as she gave us a glorious day on Saturday. Seven boats showed up to endure the weather hoping the high waters which were 24' above normal pool were going to be generous to us. Well that was not meant to be, fishing was tough as only three of the seven boats weighed fish in.

I had the opportunity to take an active duty Soldier out fishing with me. He had never been on the Tennessee River below the dam, but that did not stop him from catching fish. I got us to our first spot where smallmouths hang out in high waters, nothing. Move to the second spot and I hook a 2 pound largemouth to get the skunk out of the boat. Move to numerous spots for the next two hours and nothing. Pull up to a creek mouth and Jordan hooks up on a 3.6 pound smallmouth, which is a personal best. We work the area and Jordan sticks another 3 pound smallmouth. For almost the rest of the day nothing, not even a drum which are very abundant down there. With 5 minutes left I manage a keeper spot with time running out and thinking we will not even be in the running.

Pulling up to the ramp there are a lot of long faces and talk of extremely tough fishing conditions, but someone always catches them. First boat to weigh in has 4 fish that weighed 5.33 and the anglers were happy they weighed that much. Second boat to weigh in had 3 fish, but in their sack was a monster 5.07 smallmouth and they ended up with 8.52. Then we got to weigh in, as the director I usually weigh in last. Pulled my two little fish out of one side of the live well and put them in the weigh bag. Then opened the other side with Jordan's two smallmouths and put them in the weigh in bag. I put them on the scale and let someone other than me call the weight, 10.31 for the win.

To top it off it was Jordan's first win since he was stationed at Ft. Campbell and those were the biggest smallmouths he had ever caught. Another great day on the water.
